Cooking Up Language During Mealtimes

This post was inspired by those who took our poll on Instagram and voted to hear about how we work on language skills during mealtimes.

Now that the season has changed, a variety of fruits (and veggies) are becoming available. Capitalize on this opportunity for your little one to learn the names of these items while giving them a fun job. Make kebabs!

Have your little one help you make kebabs with whatever you have available (cheese, fruit, etc). Ask them what food they should "poke" first by holding up 2 different items and asking, "Do you want a strawberry or pineapple? "

Once they make a selection (either by pointing or verbalizing), help them skewer the food while narrating. Ex: "Put on/poke pineapple."

Repeat these steps until your kebab is complete! Afterwards, you can take turns biting into the kebab saying something like "I bite" or "Bite watermelon".

Activities like these are so fun and novel for our little ones, thus making them even more inclined to learn the names of all the items they see and hear.

How do you include your little one in the kitchen?
